Bret Bielema opening day updates

  • Bielema says the team will go in full pads beginning next Tuesday. There will be full scrimmages two Saturdays this month.

  • Transfers include Denzell Evans, Eric Hawkins, Willie Sykes and Derrick Graham.

  • Bielema said the team had a “record-setting” GPA this summer - 3.1. “They are doing things right.”

  • Reggie Mitchell will coach kickoff return, Paul Rhoads kickoff coverage, Barry Lunney punt return and Bret Bielema punt coverage.

  • Cole Kelley has a back strain, but is cleared to practice. He suffered the injury in the weight room.

  • Arkansas will have five two-a-day practices. Night practices will probably be more special teams work.

  • Jake Raulerson will begin as the team’s No. 2 center.

  • Michael Taylor will miss the first two weeks of camp. He won’t be at Arkansas until the first day of class.

  • Josh Williams is going to practice at linebacker, but may get a look at fullback. Coaches weren’t sure he would ever play again.

  • Bielema indicates Kody Walker and Rawleigh Williams will see some live contact this preseason. “We have to be smart about it…We’ll hit them all the time. We won’t cut tackle them…Hit them and see where it goes. When they haven’t been hit in so long, that’s a big concern.”

  • Bielema indicates he’s iffy on how he feels about new social media rules. “There’s a whole world of violations that are just floating around out there.” He says UA compliance sends daily tips on dos and don’ts.

  • Bielema: “We’re not going to lie, cheat or steal to get guys here. If you have to do that, you’re setting a bad precedent.”

  • More on Rawleigh Williams: “When I heard broken neck, I thought it was over.” Bielema says he encouraged Williams’ parents to find a doctor they felt comfortable with during surgery/rehab process.

  • Bielema says Tevin Beanum “has a situation he needs to get control of. It’s a very unique and individual thing with him.” Beanum is in summer classes, but is not on the roster. There is a chance he can be added before the season begins.

  • Bielema says he hopes to identify the 5 to 7 best offensive linemen by the end of five practices. “It’s hard to do that until you see them in full pads.”

  • Bielema on keeping 5 QBs happy: “It starts with the type of people you recruit.”

  • Bielema says Austin is the team’s best QB. “All of those other quarterbacks know it.”

  • The team will have an extra skeleton period in practice the first couple of practices to allow the QBs to throw more.

  • Bielema says he has never had a team as experienced at wide receiver. “There’s no one guy like the other. They all have their own skill set, own personality, own learning curve.”

  • Bielema says Deon Stewart is the fastest player on the team, but Jordan Jones “can flat-out fly.”

  • He says he thinks the secondary will be the most improved group on the team.

  • KT Marks is one class away from graduating. He may be a graduate transfer if he can graduate before the season. He may take the final class at Arkansas in the fall.

  • Last year’s LSU game is playing on the TVs in the lobby.
