Arkansas Friday baseball scrimmage notes

The teams are taking batting practice now and getting ready for the scrimmage.

No interviews today allowed, but all masked up and ready to bring some details to the board.

Top First Inning

Sophomore lefty Caden Monke starts on the mound for the Black team as we are just now underway,

Fans lead off batter and freshman infielder Zach White

Robert Moore lines out to the LC field gap

Brady Slavens lines a single to center
Cason Tollett flies out to deep RC

Bottom First

Grad transfer Lel Lockhart on the mound for the Red team

SS Jalen Battles walks to lead off, but is then tagged out on a pickoff 1-3-6

But he is allowed to stay on first so they can work on the situation

1B Matt Goodheart grounds into a forceout at second.

CF Christian Franklin whiffs

OF Braylon Webb walks to put runners at first and second with two outs

Bryce Matthews grounds out to 2B to end the frame.

No score after one inning

Top Second Inning

Monke back out to pitch the second.

Cullen Smith flies out to center

Zach Gregory HBP, runner Robert Moore sent to first, but Gregory is allowed to continue his at-bat

Moore steals second before Gregory pops out to short

Jacob Nesbit lines out to right for third out.

Still scoreless

Bottom Second Inning

Lockhart still on the mound for the Red.

He fans Cayden Wallace, gets Casey Opitz on a dribbler back to the mound and gets Charlie Welch on a foul pop out to first to first baseman Cullen Smith

Monke now in his third inning of work

He gets catcher Dylan Leach to ground out to third baseman Jacob Nesbit

Freshman OF Clayton Gray strikes out

Zac White also grounds out to third.

Bottom Third Inning

Ethan Bates leads off with a single and races to third on a wild pitch

Jackson Cobb singles him home for a 1-0 lead and then steals second as Jalen Battles fans.

Matt Goodheart flies out left for the second out to end the day for Lockhart.

RH Evan Gray takes the mound to face RH Christian Franklin, who grounds out to short to end the inning

Top 4

White up again although I had him making the last out.

He whiffs, but Robert Moore follows with an infield hit and steals second, but is left stranded there as Slavens and Cason Tollett are retired

Bottom Fourth

Gray still on mound

Braydon Webb flies out, but Bryce Matthews shows some wheels and reaches on a swinging bunt that rolls down the third base line.

Matthews then steals second, but Wallace and Optiz leave him stranded.

Top 5th inning:

RH Jason Wiggins on to pitch for the Black team.

He retires Cullen Smith, but hits Zach Gregory to put the tying run on base. It’s the second time Gregory has been hit and he’s not happy as one might expect.

Jacob Nesbit fans and Gregory gets to bat again since he has only seen 3 pitches today - two of which hit him.

He ropes one to center only to have Franklin make a great diving stop.

Black 1, Red 0 - heading to the bottom of the fifth

Bottom Fifth inning

Freshman infielder Ethan Bates homers off the Baum Stadium scoreboard to put the Black team up 2-0.

The former Lakeside standout has scored both runs

Kevin Kopps now in to pitch for the Red with one out

Jackson Cobb walks, steals second and scores on Matt Goodheart’s single to make it 3-0

Kopps fans Franklin to end the fifth

Top Sixth inning

Red gets on the scoreboard as Dylan Leach singles, gets to third on MIchael Brooks’ double and he and Leach score on Zac White’s base hit off Wiggins

Bottom Sixth Inning:

Braydon Webb and Cayden Wallace single an out apart, but Kopps fans Opitz and Charlie Welch to end the inning without any damage

Brooks doubles as well

Top Seventh inning:

Cason Tollett singles before Wiggins gets Cullen Smith and gives way to Evan Taylor.

Taylor needs just two pitches to get Zach Gregory to ground into a double play.

Bottom Seventh

Jacon Burton in to pitch the Red squad.

Ethan Bates continues to make an impression as he singles, moves to third on Cobb’s single (although he is thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.

Jalen Battles singles him home for a 4-2 lead, but is also thrown out at second.

Christian Franklin’s RBI single makes it 5-2 after Goodheart walked and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher.

Top 8th

Jacob Nesbit raced to second on a short fly ball behind first base that really should have been caught.

I would have scored it error.

He moved up on a bunt and scored on Clayton Gray’s groundout

Note: We have to leave the stadium immediately after the last out.

I’ll put up a few observations Saturday after going over my scorebook and notes and verifying a few things to make sure they are correct

Bryce Matthews nearly drives one out, but comes up just short against Elijah Trest

Ethan Bates was bidding for a 4-for-4 day, but didn’t get it

Just playing eight so we have a final
