I thought he looked really nervous in the opening when on camera, but I was surprised at how well he did and enjoyed his commentary.
I typically listen to Chuck and Quinn too but my 9th grade grandson got moved up to Varsity that night and I had to see him play so I had it recorded. He got some clean up PT.
For a game call in the modern era, I thought he did a credible good job. With the monetary-based obsession to do commercials every unfilled millisecond, I was surprised by the amount of time he was given.to elucidate. He noted botched calls on a couple of occasions without elaboration. There is not much a booth can do about a missed call but raise credibility questions. The fumble and the targeting calls following reviews were exceptions. He completely missed the 2nd quarter-endzone question of interference which for an offensive guru was a little surprising. Overall a solid B+.
The standard established by Keith Jackson and Frank Broyles cannot be equaled or surpassed. For comparison recall the preceding verbal Xanax administered by Bud Wilkerson and Chris Schenkel. The soft Georgia drawls of Keith and Frank are forever in memory never to re-emerge in this time of Carosal broadcast teams.
The best ever. That is like comparing Ted Williams hitting with the rest. Not a fair fight. Keith and Frank were all about the game and not themselves, and they certainly knew the game.
Example: I remember them doing a game from NE with NE v FSU. NE was one of the best at that time and FSU was on the edge. This was an early season game. As the game wore on, Frank predicted that Bobby at FSU was developing a very strong program that would be hard to beat. We know how that turned out. Frank knew that sort of thing.
Broyles knew Bowden would make FSU “Bettah”.
Another ex Razorback, Pat Summerall, was part of the best NFL duo ever to call games. Pat and John Madden together were fantastic. I remember thinking a couple of times that it would be cool if Frank and Pat could do a college game together.
I thought he did a good job. It’s tough at first for several reasons but all the talking in your ear while you’re talking is tough.
