Final Analysis

First and foremost, what we all just went through has to be the most painfully watched Razorback football season in a lifetime. With the facilities, NW Arkansas area, academics and fan base, the program should never be at such a ridiculously low level. Never. Yet, here we sit at the bottom in the SEC, and thankfully, the season is over.

Though Chad Morris only had about two months to recruit after being hired, he seemingly has understood the need for speed from the beginning. From published reports, Morris has positioned an outstanding recruiting class with players who can motor, scoot and run.

From all observations, the Morris offense starts with and is considerably dependent upon the quarterback position. There is no hiding a weak link at quarterback in his system. Having said that, the right quarterback will make an immediate impact and huge difference, offensively. With adequate and meaningful reps in practice, Connor Noland and/or John Stephen Jones may eventually thrive in the Morris offense. Kelly Bryant out of Clemson or KJ Jefferson from Mississippi are both very talented, dual threat quarterbacks and suited for the RPO offense.

More importantly, Morris also seems to understand the necessity for defense in the SEC. While this season was horrendous and hurtful to watch, John Chavis has had some of the better defenses in the conference. With an influx of more talented players - and again, speed - Chavis' schematics are solid. If Morris and staff can maintain the incoming class, immediate help should be on the way.

To some extent, winning football games can also be a mental exercise. In my opinion, Morris inherited a "big boy" football team terribly slow afoot, with a questionable mindset. There should rightfully be wholesale change in both talent and mentality in regard to player personnel beginning in December through fall camp, 2019.

In direct contrast to Bret Bielema's five year infatuation with "big boy" football, everything Morris has done in recruiting seems to be geared toward putting speed on the field. Bielema could never grasp the concept, but Morris is absolutely right - you either have speed or you're chasing it. The Razorbacks have spent all year and most of the previous five seasons chasing it.

As to the future, the recruiting pipeline to Texas reestablished by Morris has been impressive. Whether he can coach in the SEC, utilizing his own players, to run his own style of play, remains to be seen. Given his legendary status among Texas high school coaches and almost unbeatable teams, combined with stops at Tulsa, Clemson and SMU, I personally believe that Morris can return the football program to a consistently high level.

In summary, things never stay the same. They either get better or worse. The Razorbacks will definitely get better. The question is how soon, and even more importantly, by how much.

In case anyone missed it, Clay Henry recently penned an excellent story about Clemson's former athletic director and Razorback, Terry Don Phillips. Phillips played an instrumental [and controversial] role in Dabo Swinney's early rise to head coach at Clemson as well as the eventual hiring of Chad Morris as OC. It is encouraging to read Phillips' confident, favorable and positive view on Morris.
